Why go

Steamboat combines a major ski mountain with a historic downtown, Western heritage and the Yampa River. Winter brings skiing, snowboarding and snow activities; summer shifts to biking, hiking, rodeo nights, river time and outdoor music.

The mountain base and downtown are separate, so use the free bus when you can instead of moving your car several times a day.

When to go

Winter is the main snow-sports season. June through September is best for most hiking, biking, river and event itineraries. Shoulder seasons are quieter, but trails, lifts and attractions may be between operating periods.

Top things to do

Choose a mountain day

Ski or ride in winter; in summer, compare hiking, mountain biking and scenic lift options.

Soak in the hot springs

Choose between a convenient in-town soak and a more rustic trip outside town, checking access and reservation rules.

Follow the Yampa River

Walk or bike the Core Trail to connect parks, the botanic garden, downtown stops and river views.

See Fish Creek Falls

Choose the short overlook or a longer trail based on the weather and what feels comfortable for your group.

Yampa River Core Trail

The paved riverside path links parks, the botanic garden and downtown, making it one of the easiest ways to see the city.

Getting around

Steamboat Springs Transit runs free buses between the ski area, downtown and many lodging areas on seasonal schedules. The paved Yampa River Core Trail is an easy way to walk or bike across town. A car or reserved transfer helps with the regional airport, outlying hot springs and trailheads.

A simple two-day plan

Day 1

Downtown and the Yampa

  • Walk part of the Yampa River Core Trail.
  • Explore historic downtown and a Western heritage stop.
  • Finish with a hot springs reservation or an evening event.
Day 2

Mountain and falls

  • Make the ski area or a summer mountain activity your primary plan.
  • Add Fish Creek Falls only if time and conditions allow.
  • Use the free bus when it serves your lodging and destination.

Know before you go

  • The ski area, downtown and outlying hot springs are separate zones; check travel time before stacking reservations.
  • Road access to rustic hot springs can have vehicle and seasonal requirements.
  • River recreation depends on current flow, closures and local safety guidance.
  • Reserve airport transfers, lodging and popular winter activities early.
