Trip preparation
A Colorado packing list that works in every season
A flexible packing system for city days, mountain weather, outdoor activities and fast temperature changes.

The year-round base
Colorado trips often combine a city, a mountain town and outdoor time. Start with comfortable walking shoes, breathable shirts, a warm mid-layer and a light weather-resistant shell.
- Sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm
- Refillable water bottle
- Small daypack and portable charger
- Comfortable shoes with dependable traction
- Hat and one warm layer
Summer additions
Warm city afternoons can turn into cool mountain evenings. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the mountains, so check the forecast and begin exposed hikes early.
- Rain shell
- Quick-drying clothing
- Insect repellent for selected areas
- Extra water and trail snacks
Winter additions
Choose insulated, water-resistant footwear and pack gloves, a warm hat and layers that can be adjusted indoors. A winter road trip also needs an ice scraper and basic emergency supplies.
Pack for the activity, not the photograph
Attractions and trails vary widely in difficulty and exposure. Review the official guidance for each activity and bring the recommended equipment rather than relying on a general vacation list.
